Speaker
Noel introduced Alan.  There are not a lot of OAM’s around and it is a great privilege to have one in our Club.  Now we want to know more.

Alan said that if he talked too long it would be boring, but if his talk was too short, we would think he was hiding something.  PDG means “past, dead & gone”.

His parents were in NSW during WW2 and then New Guinea.  He went to 12 different schools.  In 1947 he started with CSR in Sydney as a clerk, then to Fiji.
Win was born in NZ, and they married in 1953.  He was a field officer in a sugar plantation in Fiji for three and a half years. They were the only Europeans.
They had three daughters and a son.
He was transferred back to Sydney in 1961.
Not surprisingly, they kinda missed the 20 servants they had previously.
1965 Melbourne
1971 Sales in Darwin
Left three day after Tracy
In Melbourne on Waverley Council.  President of High School Advisory Council.
Win C.A.B. & real estate.
1979 transferred to Rockhampton
Had loved Melbourne except for the weather.
Golf has been very important in their lives.
1982 transferred to the Gold Coast with Building Materials division.  Challenge of the southerners.
1985 was President of RC Burleigh Heads, and in 1989 District Governor of 9640.- a marvellous year with the 53 Clubs.
1990 visited Austria as guest of the DG
The dates were coming thick and fast now, but between 1990 and 2010 they have been sponsoring education for children in Indonesia with the Salvation Army and raised 1 Million dollars. $110 paid for a student per year
1991 Conference in Townsville.
1992 Conference of Legislators in Anaheim.
Did I say various committees?
But Golf is held in high esteem with no Rotary business allowed on Sundays.
In 1996 he had the opportunity for a Liberal seat in Sydney but Win said no.
Lots of travel.

In 2000 at Sunday golf, Alan realised that he couldn’t see the green.  He had macular bleeding and now has side vision only.  We now know why he thought we “all looked like blobs” at Rotary meetings.  He has various aids such as torches, binoculars, CD on MD, reading machine, digital player (now online) 30,000 books, white cane, badge and brochure.
Paddy was thinking of getting a dog.  His friend Mike said “just don’t get a Labrador - so many of their owners seem to go blind”

Thanks Alan

Alf - RC Caloundra reported “by far the best”  Re membership, 40 letters to various organisations, ANZ Belinda on Rotary projects.

IN 1945, THE WRITTEN OBJECTIVE FOR THE ROTARY FOUNDATION WAS:

    2.    The fostering of any tangible and effective projects which have as their purpose the furthering of better understanding and friendly relations between the peoples of different
nations; and

    3.    The providing of emergency relief for Rotarians and their families wherever war or other
disaster has brought general destruction and suffering

22nd September Meeting - Neha Chandrasekar - NYSF candidate

 Chair
Stewart
Apparently the plovers have blown a hole in Stewarts lawn neatness fetish by making a nest in the middle of it.  And he reckons Judy is breathing a sigh of relief as her Rotary Presidency is definitely for a fixed term.

International Toast
Norm proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Peja in Kosova, chartered June 2006, and supported by Indio Sunrise in California.  Peja contributed to the Hurricane Katrina appeal for New Orleans.  They are committed to cleaning up the city centre and giving residents clean water & hygiene kits.

Guests
Neha and her dad Chandra, & Donna Brand from Nth Minnesota - braving our chilly Spring weather.  Watch out Sergeant, Donna’s into operational & procedural compliance issues… and her son is marrying into Noel’s family.

Makeups
No

Apologies
John & Pauline are on the Gold Coast “getting their car fixed”, and Genta’s “gone fishing”.
None of the rumours are true.  Also missing us are the Strongs, Heidi, Iain, Merv & Mila

President’s Address
Judy reported on 'Tranquility Garden' planting of the 'Friendship Rose' and gardening on Thursday & major cleaning on Saturday. - scroll down for the full story.

Melbourne Cup Tickets - we need an organizer for this important fundraiser.  We made $2,600 last year ... & Deborah says yes.

BBQ rosters coming round.

Speaker
Helen introduced Neha, our National Youth Science Forum candidate. Her family have been living on the Coast for five years  She has just been through a tough selection process with flying colours. she is 15 years old and attends Matthew Flinders Anglican College.

Neha thanked the Rotary Club for the opportunity to participate in the Forum.
She’s into maths, science, debating, nippers, Duke of Edinburgh awards.  and did I say chemistry, biology physics.  If you were wondering where the next generation of leading scientists will come from I think Neha may be able to help.

Her journey started when five NYSF students spoke at her school’s assembly.  One had been to the international forum in Canada.

Application is an online process and a need to find a sponsoring Rotary Club, which involves a letter  and meeting with a friendly Youth Director, in this case Helen.  Regional selections involve a half hour interview with a panel of three.  They are not looking for “exact” answers, and questions were around topics as diverse as Google cars and live cattle exports.  There were also questions on Neha’s specific topic, which is biology, and included probing on stem cell research ethics, publishing false information, thinking/talking on the spot.  She says her debating experience helped and she learnt a lot.

Wait … 2016. Medical research future?  Ian Frazer.  Develop leadership skills.

 - well, that’s what I wrote down.

Neha finished with another thank you to the Club and especially to Helen.
Stuart thanked Neha & Chandra

Chandra got a few words in.  He looks like he might make a good Rotarian.

Directors
Anna will be the Shelter Box Ambassador for the Club.  A very necessary endeavor given the problems in Europe and the Middle East.
Judy spoke about hat day

Sergeant
Ian took a very strict line with us - sorta matched his shirt

WHAT THE ARCHITECT OF THE
ROTARY FOUNDATION HAD TO SAY:
“The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary . . . we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity.” Arch C. Klumph, President of Rotary International, 1916-1917
(this is heavy stuff for architects)

Speaker
Julianna introduced Erin from the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation.
She started with then 12 years ago and is the national community engagement officer.
& thanks Mark for doing the slides.

Erin has a busy day ahead with the Caloundra Christian College next this morning.
90% of cases are in developing countries and the aim is to eliminate worldwide.  2006 Australian of the Year Professor Ian Frazer’s vaccine is now six years old.  320K have been vaccinated in the Asia Pacific Region.

National screening started in Australia in 1991, but there is still “work to do”.  200/year die in Australia whereas 130K are diagnosed with abnormal pap tests (not smears)

Her work includes talking to schools about HPV virus (which is not related to HIV or Herpes) but causes warts, is not just sexually transmitted, can also cause problems with males and is very contagious.  The vaccine is for four strains only.

They are starting in PNG with Rotary help.  Ian Frazer is currently in Nepal where 31K girls have been vaccinated.  The vaccine costs $450 for three shots but is discounted to $20 - $50 in developing countries.  The vaccine works best at a young age where the immune response is better.  Screening is still the best protection for older women.

It took four years to get started in the Solomons.  Screening difficulties have been improved with better equipment, and new technology such as the mobile colposcope costs only $2,000.

Next Wednesday off to Kiribati via Nandi in Fiji with 14 Somerville House students.  Rotary Global Grant is worth $150K
Deborah thanked Erin
Sergeant
Gerry thought it was a bit boring without being able to extort actual dollars.  Please nobody suggest some other way of making life uncomfortable for ourselves at the hands of an over zealous Sergeant

What the?
Don't give the Sergeant any ideas

(Some shady looking characters around Bellvista)

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF ROTARY FOUNDATION GRANTS?
“Doing good in the world.” This is achieved via three programs categories of The Rotary Foundation.
District Grants– allows up to 25% of funding given three years ago through Annual Fund – SHARE to do projects that fall within the mission. Almost any type of project can be done and local clubs work with their districts to figure out what projects and activities are nearest and dearest to their hearts.
Global Grants- funds sustainable and measurable scholarships, humanitarian grants and vocational training teams in the Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus.
Packaged Grants- Fully funded projects done with strategic partners that allow Rotarians to work with experts in the six areas of focus, Multiplying the good work of our Foundation and creating relevant partnerships showing the world what Rotary can do and the power of teamwork.
AS A ROTARIAN, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ONE OF THESE PROGRAMS. WHICH ONE INTERESTS YOU?
